The Safety, Efficacy and Tolerability of Mauermayer's Stone Punch for Bladder Calculi Under Local Anaesthesia

Abstract :

Introduction Bladder calculi are found in 5% of patients presenting with urolithiasis. Over the years, management of bladder calculi have evolved into minimally invasive means. We examined the use of the Mauermayer�s Stone Punch in 38 consecutive patients presenting at a single centre. Materials and Methods All patients with symptomatic bladder calculi, were offered the option of undergoing the procedure under local anaesthesia (LA) in an urgent setting. All patients underwent the procedure under LA, which was performed using a standard Mauermayer�s Stone Punch. Results A total of 38 patients underwent cystolithotrity using the Mauermayer�s Stone Punch. The mean age was 50 years (18 – 75 years). There were 35 males, and 3 females. Visual Analog Scores (VAS) were 5.5 intra–operatively, and 1.9 postoperatively. Two patients required a second–look procedure for residual fragments. Average duration of the procedure was 18 minutes. Conclusion The Mauermayer�s Stone Punch remains a usefult adjunct tool, and is safe, efficacious, and well–tolerated in resource–limited settings, when patients are willing to undergo procedures under LA in an urgent sitting.
