Abstract :

The study investigates the use of music as a technique for improving the teaching and learning of oral English in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. The descriptive survey research design which was adopted to guide the study had three research questions. The population comprised all senior secondary two (SS2) English language teachers from the thirty two (32) public secondary schools in the area of study. Non stratified proportional random sampling technique was used to draw the fifty teachers. Data were obtained through the Oral Music Questionnaire (OMQ) designed by the researchers. The instrument was validated by experts. Data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The findings indicated that musical instruments can serve as effective instructional material for the teaching and learning of Oral English and that the use of music can improve students interest in Oral English. Amongst the recommendations made was that Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB) in conjunction with Principals of secondary schools should organize seminars, workshops and in-service training for the teachers of English to enable them update their skills and knowledge about evolving trends such as the use of music in the teaching of English language.
