Thyroid Incidentaloma: A retrospective study evaluating the frequency of malignancy in clinically benign thyroid swelling

Abstract :

 Background: Thyroid swellings are treated as per the initial clinical findings. The objective of this retrospective study is to find the frequency of malignancy in clinically benign thyroid swellings. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective study, the records of admitted patients in our hospital were reviewed from January 2014 to December 2015. Patients with benign appeå thyroid swellings, who underwent surgery, were picked up. Results: Ninety two patients were studied, of which, 65 were clinically diagnosed to be multinodular goiter and 27 were clinically solitary nodule in thyroid. Total 6 malignancies were reported on final histopathological examination. Conclusions: There is significant incidence of incidental thyroid malignancy in a clinically benign thyroid swelling.
