Abstract :

Aim: The use of adjuncts like chlorhexidine local delivery and diode laser decontamination have been found to improve the clinical outcomes of scaling and root planing in non–surgical periodontal therapy. The current study was therefore, performed to comparatively assess the efficacy of 940–nm diode LASER as an appurtenance to SRP + Chlorhexidine subgingival irrigation for non–surgical periodontal treatment in patients with chronic periodontitis. Materials and Method : 15 patients with Chronic Periodontitis were divided into two groups: Group 1 (SRP + Chlorhexidine subgingival irrigation + Diode laser pocket disinfection) and Group 2 (Chlorhexidine subgingival irrigation). Plaque Index, Gingival Index, Probing depth, RCAL. Mean anaerobic bacteria count was assessed by PCR Analysis at baseline and 30 days. Results: All the treated sites showed a statistically significant reduction in PI, GI and PPD. After one month, a mean PPD reduction of 1.75mm in Group 1 and 1.18mm in Group 2 was seen (p>0.05). Conclusions: The results encourage the use of diode laser as an adjunct to non–surgical treatment of periodontal pockets in patients with moderate chronic periodontitis.
