Toxic Effect of Commonly used Fertilizers on the Gills of Fresh Water fish Heteropneustes fossilis

Abstract :

 The effects of commonly used fertilizers like diammonium phosphate, urea and calcium ammoniam nitrate on the histology of the gills of fresh water fish Heteropneustes fossilis were studied. The toxic effect of diammonium phosphate was more pronounced than that of urea and calcium ammoniam nitrate. Diammonium phosphate is highly toxic fertilizer. Marked disruptions of primary and secondary gill lamellae along with necrosis of lining cells in gills of the fish. Pronounced disruptions of primary and secondary in the gill lamellae were seen in the fish. Calcium ammonia nitrate is less toxic than other two fertilizers so, it caused less disruption of primary gill lamellae of gills in fish Heteropneustes fossilis
