TRABECULECTOMY: PUNCH Vs BLOCK EXCISION - A PROSPECTIVE COMPARATIVE STUDY

Abstract :

AIM: To assess the effectiveness of punch vs block excision in trabeculectomy for adult glaucoma with specific focus on IOP control and complications MATERIALS AND METHODS: 60 eyes of 60 glaucoma patients of age group 40–60 yrs included, randomly divided into 2 groups. Group 1 (n =30) underwent trabeculectomy with Kelly Descemet memane punch as against Group 2 (n=30) block excision, patients were followed for a  period of 1 year RESULTS: Success rate after 12 months of follow up were comparable in both groups,76.6 % (23) in punch group and 80% (24) in block excision group having P = 0.44 Overall success rate was 78.3% (47) Mean IOP drop was more in Group 2 P = 0.47. More post–operative complications in Group 1. CONCLUSION: The Block excision group had less post–op complication and better control of IOP as compared to punch trabeculectomy.
