UMBILICAL COILING INDEX AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH ADVERSE PERINATAL OUTCOMES

Abstract :

 

Aim: The aim of present study was to determine umbilical coiling index postnatally in our geographic region and to correlate it with adverse perinatal outcomes.

Method: This was a prospective study which was conducted in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eras Lucknow Medical College, Lucknow from September 2015 to October 2015.

One hundred and ten pregnant women irrespective of parity, with term gestation and singleton pregnancy in active labour and admitted in labour room were studied. Patients were observed in the second and third stage of labor. Results: Out of 110 coils evaluated at birth 47 (42.72%) were of female babies and 63 (57.27%) were of male were seen in 88 (80%) cases while clockwise coiling were seen in 22 (20%) cases (t=2.57, p<0.01) TABLE 1When we compared the normocoiled group (n=88) with the hypocoiled group (n=12), low Apgar score, PIH in mother, meconium staining, NICU admission, were significantly higher in the latter.

Conclusion: Low umbilical coiling index might be evaluated as an indicator of adverse perinatal outcome.
