Abstract :

In the present era, obesity is of global concern with serious public health consequences. In recent years, emerging evidence has linked Vitamin–D not only to its known effects on calcium and bone metabolism, but also to chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease and its risk factors. Hence there is need for a study to evaluate the interrelationship between Vitamin D levels, BMI and Lipid profile in young adults. The objective of this study is to assess Serum 25(OH) Vitamin–D, BMI and Serum Lipid levels in young adults of Bangalore city, and to evaluate the interrelationship of the above parameters in the same subjects. After obtaining Ethical Clearance, 180 eligible healthy young subjects were recruited for the study. Written informed consent was taken. For each subject, fasting blood sample of 4ml was collected for Serum 25(OH) Vitamin–D assessment and Serum Lipid profile. Height and weight were measured, and BMI was calculated. Results were compiled and statistically analyzed. In this case control Study, the cases whose BMI ≥ 25 had significantly decreased Mean Vitamin–D levels which was associated with higher mean lipid levels compared with those with Controls (BMI < 25). This study shows an association with Vitamin–D and obesity. Elevated Lipids and Dyslipidemic Triglyceride levels associated with Vitamin–D deficiency in overweight or obese young adults indicates a need for clinical monitoring and appropriate intervention.
