A STUDY OF MIGRAINE HEADACHE SPECTRUM IN PATIENTS TREATED IN TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Abstract :

 Out of 437 cases of primary headache who presented in Neurology OPD of Tirunelveli Medical College hospital from October 2015 to October 2016, 107 patients (24%) were diagnosed as Migraine. 67% cases were female and 33% were male. Age distribution showed a bimodal distribution at the age group of 15–25 and 45–55yrs. Cases of migraine with aura were 25% of total and Migraine without aura amounted to 72%. Migraine without aura was much more common in the female population(2:5 male to female ratio). Migraine with aura was similarly distributed among males and females. There were three cases of hemiplegic migraine and one case of ophthalmoplegic migraine. 29% had mild disability, 34% had moderate disability, 16% had severe disability. These patients were treated with prophylactic therapy using Propranolol and Amitryptilline, amd followed up for 6 months. 30% cases reported no improvement in symptoms. Average MIDAS score of the 84 patients who recieved prophylaxis reduced from  14.4 to 8.6
