Abstract :

Hospitals globally are facing unprecedented crisis due to increasingly high cost of medicine due to limited raw materials and isolation techniques. This study was conducted to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative anti–oxidant and phytochemical profile of Buchholzia coriacea. Distillates at varying degrees, methanolic and fermented aqueous extracts were assayed.Up to 0.003 mg/ 100glevels of hyperoside (a flavone found with potent antioxidant activity, with the potential to protect the human lung fioblast from hydrogen peroxide –induced oxidative damage), was obtained for the fermented extracts –this fell below the detection limit of the analytical instruments in other treatments. Higher values of oxalate in fermented sample may have been influenced by the profile of La caserasoda used in the fermentation. Comparatively, various formulations revealed total phytochemicals of about 1437.44 mg /100g for fermented aqueous extract, 1972.51 mg/100g for methanolic extracts, 0.006 mg/100g for la casera soda, and 0.05 mg/100g, 0.04 mg/100g and 356.17 mg/100g for the distillates of aqueous extract at 100°C, 200°C , and 300°C respectively. From the results obtained, fermentation and distillation of aqueous extracts of B.coriacea could be better means of isolating important phytochemicals in preference to methanolic extraction; whereas methanolic extraction gave a better quantitative isolation of phytochemicals therein and the amazing composition calls for further screening
