Abstract :

Pregnancy is the phenomenon of exaggerated physiology, with this phenomenon there are many alterations in the metabolism of maternal systems due to an addition of accessory metabolic organ1 in the form of foetus. THYROID has a major role in the maintenance of metabolism of the body. Therefore, the changes in the thyroid function are imminent. Surprisingly, the proportion of change in thyroid function is not much as compared to the amount of metabolism that occurs during pregnancy2. Hence the project is undertaken to know the alterations of thyroid function during pregnancy. Therefore, this study is directed towards finding the inter–relationship of TSH, T3, T4 in all the three trimesters of  pregnancy and it’s association with fetal outcome in the form of cord TSH and birth weight.200 antenatal patients were followed till delivery. This study included the patients having normal thyroid concentrations. We conclude that  very few patients presented with any changes during pregnancy ,most of them had  hypothyroidism but the cord TSH values remained with in the normal limits also it was noted that thyroid estimation has to be done only once in antenatal period .
