Carbon Trading a Step towards Green Environment

Abstract :
The concept of carbon credits came into existence as a result of increasing awareness of the need for pollution control. Carbon credits are a tradable permit scheme. They provide a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by giving them a monetary value. Carbon credits were one of the outcomes of the Kyoto Protocol. Carbon credit trading is an innovative method of controlling emissions using the free market. Carbon trading market ings buyers and sellers of carbon credits together with standardized rules of trade. India signed and ratified the Protocol in August, 2002 and has emerged as a world leader in reduction of greenhouse gases by adopting Clean Development Mechanisms (CDMs) in the past few years. There is a great opportunity awaiting India in carbon trading. This article discusses various operational issues in carbon trading mechanism and the Indian scenario for carbon trading.
