China’s WTO Accession: An Empirical Assessment of Merchandise Trade with India

Anjali Tandon

Abstract :

This paper tries to assess the impact of China’s WTO accession on its trade with India. Empirical evidence in this paper shows that China’s WTO compliance had an altogether positive impact on its trade with the world. On bilateral front vis–Ă –vis India, despite an increasing trend in total bilateral trade, volume of trade continued to be low. Bilateral trade concentrated in few sectors only. Moreover, India witnessed to have a trade deficit with China, which widened over the years. Increase in India’s exports to China over the period 2001–2005 could largely be attributed due to easier access to the Chinese market after China’s entry into WTO. After acceding to WTO, China further liberalised foreign participation in its domestic manufacturing industries and syncronised FDI into sectors with higher export orientation. Consequently, India witnessed larger imports from China under these categories.
