Abstract :

INTRODUCTION: Supraclavicular achial plexus block is a common regional anaesthetic technique used to provide anaesthesia and analgesia for upper extremity surgery. The anaesthetic and analgesic requirements get reduced to a huge extent by the use of adjuvants. METHODS: 130 ASA class–I/II adult patients, aged 20–60 years undergoing elective surgical procedure of the upper limb were selected and randomly allocated in 2 groups (n=65). Patients in Group A received 28 ml of bupivacaine 0.25% with 2ml (1μg/kg diluted in saline) clonidine and patients in Group B received 28 ml of bupivacaine 0.25% with 2ml (1μg/kg diluted in saline) dexmedetomidine . We assessed the onset and duration of sensory and motor block, duration of analgesia, haemodynamic parameters and the proportion of cases with complications. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in the onset of sensory and motor block in both the groups. The duration of sensory & motor block, and the duration of analgesia was significantly lesser in Group A compared to Group B. (P < 0.001)
