Abstract :

Aim: The aim of present study was to establish a specific pattern of blood pressure (BP) changes in accordance with posture changes in healthy adult males.  Background: It is known that many factors influence an individual’s blood pressure, one of which is body position. The aim of present study was to establish a specific pattern of blood pressure (BP) changes in accordance with posture changes in healthy adult males.  Methods: Fifty healthy young males with age 18–25 years and BMI 18–25 kg/m2 taken part in this study. Blood pressure was recorded by mercury sphygmomanometer in supine, sitting and standing posture on right arm within the 45 seconds. Mean ± standard deviation of the observation for all the parameters were calculated and comparison in supine, sitting and standing position was done by repeated measures ANOVA test and tukey’s post hoc test.  Results: Systolic blood pressure (mmHg) was significantly increased (p<0.001) while changing posture from supine to sitting. Diastolic blood pressure (mmHg) was significantly (p<0.001) increased while changing posture from supine to sitting and supine to standing posture. Conclusions: This study concludes that, change in body posture changes systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure. The parasympathetic activity decreases and sympathetic activity increases with posture change from supine to sitting to standing.
