Abstract :

Background: Conventionalcervicalcytology is  the mostwidelyusedcervicalcancerscreeningtestinthe  world. Squamousintraepithelialneoplasia(SIL)and  cervicalcancer remainimportanthealthproblemsforwomenworldwide.

AimandObjective:To study varioustypesofcervicallesions withrelevantfactorssuch asage, parity, symptomstoclassifycervical lesionsintomalignant& benign groupsand tocorrelatethe cytological findingswithhistopathologicalfindings.

Materials and Methods: This studywas  conducted on 800 cases  of Pap  smears and  cervical biopsies, resected specimens.Afterfixationand staining, smearsand cervicalbiopsieswereprocessed andexaminedunder microscope.

Results:Agewise maximumnumberof patientswereinfourth decade(54.50%),  followedbyfifthdecade.Oncytology,59% wereinflammatorysmears and  frankmalignancywasreported in10%cases. LSILand HSILwerereportedin9%and 8.50% respectively.Maximumnumberofcasesonbiopsieswerethose ofinfections(57.50%),27%caseswerethose offrank malignancy;mostcommon beinginvasivesquamouscell carcinoma (23%),adenocarcinoma in 2% and poorly differentiated 2%. Cervicalcancerwasseenin39.65%ofpatientswithhaving3 children.10%casesdiagnosedoncytologyturned out  tobe malignantonbiopsy.

Conclusion:Papsmearfollowedbycervicalbiopsy isan effective  methodfor detectionof precancerous,cancerous andnon–cancerouschangesinthecervix.
