DEVELOPING GENERIC SKILLS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract :

 Generic skills enable an individual to generate new skills that help to succeed in new situations, manage and adapt to changes and to flourish by creating what matters even in facing adversity. The present paper elucidates the importance of generic skills. There is increasing pressure from the industry, government and other stakeholders on the higher education institutions to produce graduates with versatile generic skills. The present paper deals with the role of collaborative learning strategies in acquiring generic skills at higher education level. Collaborative learning strategies lead to a paradigm shift from content to process, promotion of in depth learning, and shift in role of teacher, learning which is self –directed and provide ample scope for reflection. The present hour need is to redesign the instructional strategies to incorporate development of generic skills.
