Abstract :

Fractures of the shaft of tibia is the most common fracture of long bones and are usually associated with severe soft tissue compromise. Conventional plating technique applied to such a multi fragmentary fracture, requires anatomic reduction, wide surgical exposure and soft tissue stripping. Minimally Invasive Percutaneous Plate Osteosynthesis (MIPPO) is a method in which a percutaneously inserted plate is fixed at a distance proximal and distal to the fracture site through minimal exposure.30 cases of closed lower one third tibia fractures treated with internal fixation using MIPPO technique at Govt. Medical college, Thrissur were followed for a period of six months. AO (Association for Osteosynthesis) type A 1.2 was the most common type of injury. The mean union time for fractures fixed with MIPPO technique is 20.3 ± 2.8 weeks. Incidence of complications was relatively less, with delayed union and deep infection occurring in 2 cases. The functional outcome which was measured by Mazur score was excellent or good in 60% of the cases which is comparable with rates in literature. MIPPO technique for fractures of the lower end of tibia has minimal complication rate and has good functional outcome.
