Histopathological study of Salivary gland neoplasms in a tertairy care hospital in North Telangana

Abstract :

 

Introduction: Salivary gland neoplasms are common day to day problem encountered in all age groups irrespective of sex distribution. Apart from noeplastic lesions many inflammatory lesions are also noted in salivary glands.

Materials & Methods: The present study is a retrospective and prospective study done in department of Pathology for a period of two years from January 2015 to December 2017. Clinical history, radiological findings and all other details were considered before diagnosing.

Results: In this study, most cases occured at 31–40 years of age. Incidence of benign tumors was 72% while that of malignant tumors were 28% overall. Benign tumors of parotid

gland were 63.3% and malignant tumors of parotid gland were 36.7% .

Conclusion: Parotid gland was the most common site of origin of both benign and malignant tumors. Plemorphic adenoma was the most common benign salivary gland tumor

and adenoid cystic carcinoma  was the most frequent malignant neoplasm. Both benign and malignant tumors were more common in females and the common age group affected

was from  31–40 years.
