IMMUNIZATION OF HEALTH–CARE PERSONNEL (HCP): A BRIEF REVIEW
Gopal Kumar
Abstract :
Healthcare personnel (HCP) are defined as all persons whose occupational activities involve contact with patients or contaminated material in a healthcare including body substances, contaminated medical supplies and equipment, contaminated environmental surfaces, or contaminated air, home healthcare, or clinical laboratory setting. Because of their contact with patients or infective material from patients, many HCP are at risk for exposure to (and possible transmission of) vaccine–preventable diseases. Ensuring that healthcare personnel (HCP) are protected against vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) is an essential part of occupational health programs in a hospital. It is essential as it: Prevents transmission of VPDs and eliminates unnecessary work restrictions, safeguards the health of HCP and protects patients from exposure to infected HCP, reduces both number of susceptible HCP and risks for transmission of VPDs to other workers and patients.
