Abstract :

Diabetes–related sensorineural heĆ„ impairment affects people’s ability to hear and understand sounds. We carried out this case control study with the purpose of determining the heĆ„ loss in type II diabetes mellitus in relation to the Age of the patients using tuning fork tests and pure tone audiometry. Aim: To study the heĆ„ loss in type II diabetics and controls. Objectives:1. To study the heĆ„ loss in relation to diabetics and controls. 2. To study the effect of age on heĆ„ loss in diabetic patients Material and Methods: 50 diabetic patients and 50 age and sex matched controls took part in the study. They were evaluated by Tuning fork tests and Pure Tone Audiometry. Results: The heĆ„ of diabetics was significantly impaired than the non–diabetic control group. This heĆ„ impairment was noted in all the frequencies tested. The heĆ„ loss was significant in both ears patients with age above 41 years. Conclusion: Type 2 diabetes causes significant heĆ„ loss in the patients, and it is affected by the Age of the patient.
