Implementatoin of Basel Convention in Saarc Region

Vikrant Srivastava

Abstract :

The Basel Convention is an international treaty signed by 169 countries to regulate the international trade of hazardous waste. The central goal of this treaty is environmentally sound management (ESM), involving controlling toxic waste from the very start that is, production, usage, reuse, recycling followed by final disposal. The Basel Ban Amendment was adopted in 1995 to outlaw the transfer of hazardous waste from developed to developing countries. Several countries have implemented the ban, including the European Union and China. However, illegal trading is pervasive and those who benefit from the waste trade continue to strongly oppose a global ban. This study is basically assessing the implementation of Basel Amendment in the country–wise scenario in the entire SAARC region & the recommendations related to E–waste Management.
