INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF GINGKO BILOBA ON CHRONIC MORPHOLOGICAL VASOSPASM THROUGH MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS IN A RAT MODEL

Abstract :

Vesseldiameterisoneofthemostimportantparametersaffectingthebloodstream.Numerousvasoactivesubstancesaresuggestedtobeinvolvedinthepathogenesisofvasospasmaftersubarachnoidhemorrhage.Inthestudy,theeffectofGinkgobilobaextractsonchronicmorphologicalvasospasmwasinvestigatedinaratmodel.Controlandexperimentalgroupsweresubdividedintothree:M1vasospasmmodelwithasiliconcoverfilledwithautologousblood,M2vasospasmmodelwithjustthesiliconcover,andthenon–operatedgroup.Thewallthicknessandlumenareawerequantifiedasthenumberofµm2unitscountedinthelumen.Forbothvariables,thedifferencesamongthecontrolM1group,theexperimentalM1andcontrolnon–operatedgroupswerefoundstatisticallysignificant(p<0.0001).TheseresultssuggestthatGingkobilobamayhaveaprotectiveeffectonsubarachnoidhemorrhage–inducedvasospasmasanantioxidant.
