Joseph (Yusuf) in Modern Arabic Poetry

Hussain Hamzah

Abstract :

Arab poets have had an artistic eye on the figure of Joseph since the 1960s. In most cases he symbolizes one thing, the victim, in keeping with the first part of the story of Joseph (the well and the prison). The political and social situation in the Arab world in recent times clearly influenced the way his figure was used. However, a number of poets in their use of this figure have oken sharply with Joseph's image in the classical religious and literary sources. In the present paper I shall attempt to analyze the various functions which the figure of Joseph possesses in modern Arabic poetry, focusing especially on the meanings given it by Arab poets. I argue that several such meanings exist in modern Arabic poetry, although the use of Joseph's figure as a symbol of the victim still predominates.
