OSSEOUS METAPLASIA OF THE CERVIX: A VERY RARE CASE REPORT

Dr. Sujata S. Giriyan, Dr. Dattasamje Krishna B.

Abstract :

Cervical metaplasia represents the replacement of the endocervical epithelium with tubal, intestinal, squamous, endometrial, transitional, cartilaginous or osseous1. Osseous metaplasia of the endometrium and cervix is an uncommon entity that causes infertility and results from the transformation of nonosseous connective tissue into mature bone2. Only 7 cases of osseous metaplasia have been described in literature till now from 19823. Ours is probably 8th case. A 49 year old multigravida female, a case of chronic PID, operated with total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo–oophorectomy and specimen was sent for histopathological examination. Osseous metaplasia is found after histopathological examination of the specimen. The most likely explanation for the finding of bone in the cervix is osseous metaplasia, secondary to the inflammatory and traumatic processes ought about by cervical infections, cervical intra–epithelial neoplasia and cervical biopsy
