Abstract :

Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections seen in clinical practice particularly in developing countries. The predominance of Gram–negative species, particularly, Escherichia coli, remained the principal pathogens causing UTI. The present study shall focus on susceptibility pattern in Urinary Isolates of E.coli in a Tertiary Care Hospital in North East India. Samples depicted bacterial growth & sterile are 190 and 95 respectively amongst the 285 analyzed urine samples. Gram negative and gram positive bacteria isolates from urine sample are 150(75%) and 40(25%) respectively. E.coli remained the most common isolate 115 (76%). The susceptibility and resistance profile of E.coli isolates in this study have shown that Nitrofurantoin (85.21%)possess the high efficacy while Ceftazidime(81.73%) possess lower efficacy. This study suggested the need for constant monitoring and susceptibility pattern of specific pathogens in different populations to formulate local antibiotic policies.
