PREVALENCE OF DEPRESSION AMONG ELDERLY IN RANI BLOCK, KAMRUP (RURAL) DISTRICT, ASSAM

Abstract :

Background – The increases in life expectancy have ought about increased numbers of certain illnesses, one of the major ones being chronic mental illnesses. It has been documented that elderly are more prone to psychological problems and depression is the commonest geriatric psychiatric disorders. Summary– In the present study the prevalence of depression was found to 14.1%. The prevalence of depression had a significant association with age, education, socio economic status, marital status. This calls for early detection of depression and early development of preventive strategies to halt this silent epidemic.
