Abstract :

Background: Diabetic dyslipidemia and microvascular complications lead to morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of dyslipidemia and microvascular complications in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. Method: cross sectional study carried out in a teaching hospital in north east India. A total of 100 newly diagnosed diabetics were included in this study. Clinical and laboratory investigations were performed as per requirement and analysed using SPSS software. Result: Microvasular complications were found in 39% of the patients ; neuropathy being the most common followed by nephropathy and retinopathy. Nephropathy and retinopathy were significantly associated (p<0.05) . Dyslipidemia was found in 30% patients with hypertriglyceridemia with low HDL being most common. Dyslipidemia was significantly associated with nephropathy and retinopathy(p<0.05). Conclusion: Diabetes has taken an epidemic proportion in our country hence early diagnosis followed by strict hyperglycaemic control is needed to prevent and delay the microvascular complications.
