Abstract :

Background: The use of Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) in combination with oxaliplatin–based chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC) to reduce neuropathy remains controversial. We evaluate this association regarding the objective response rate (ORR) and the incidence of sensitive neurotoxicity grade 2 and 3 (sNT grade 2–3). Patients and methods: They were 2 groups: Group A (Ca and Mg with oxaliplatin) and group B (oxaliplatin alone). Chi–square test was used to compare ORR and the incidence of sNT grade 2–3 in the 2 groups. Results: There were 52 patients in group A and 57 patients in group B. There was no significant difference between the two groups in ORR (46.2% versus 54.4%; p = 0.445); while the incidence of sNT grade 2–3 was lower for the combination (23.1% versus 45.6%; p = 0.016). Conclusion: The use of Ca and Mg with oxaliplatin–based chemotherapy in MCRC is beneficial.
