RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIAL OF PROBIOTICS IN PREVENTION OF SEPSIS &NECROTIZING ENTEROCOLITIS IN LOW BIRTH WEIGHT BABIES

Abstract :

 This Randomized control trial was conducted among 69 Low birth weight neonates(35 in study group & 34 in control group) admitted in NICU over a period of 2 years, to evaluate the role of probiotics in the prevention of sepsis & Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Low Birth Weight babies. The mean gestational age in the study group was 33.37+/–1.85 while in the control group was 33.21 +/–1.81.Babies had an average birth weight of 1.509 Kg in the study group and 1.564 kg in the control group. In this study, of the 69 babies enrolled,8.51% in the study group had sepsis while 8.82% in the control group development sepsis . No baby in either group had NEC and no baby in either group had feed intolerance. This study showed no statistical significance in the incidence of sepsis/ NEC between the study and the control groups.
