Alex Pizzio

Abstract :

The current paper is part of a list of studies that aim to contribute for the understanding of questions about coping with and struggling against poverty and adversity conditions. Based on such perspective, a study encompassing babassu coconut eakers was performed in Bico do Papagaio region. The current study used the concept of recognition – as self–recognition factor – in interface with the concept of resilience – as analysis axis. Its goal was to determine whether recognition is related to resilience in these individuals. Results indicate a link among recognition, social identity and resilience within these groups. Thus, it is possible to see greater capacity to cope with adversities arising from the activity and/or from the social context in question, when individuals sense to be recognized for their skills and capabilities.
