Abstract :

AIM: To assess the heå status in terms of degree and type of heå loss and establish the burden of  this disability in the society. MATERIALS AND METHODS:             Study conducted in our ENT department from April 2014 to March 2015.Total number of cases are 1575. After an otorhinolaryngeal examination, all the patients were subjected to pure tone audiometry using MAICA–MA52 audiometer. RESULTS:             Our study comprises 64% Males and 36% Females. Out of this, 15% conductive deafness and 42% sensorineural heå loss. Mild heå loss 29% ,Moderate 26% and severe heå loss in 11% of cases.. The alarming information is that, about 5% have total heå loss of Sudden Sensorineural type (SSNHL). CONCLUSION: Pure tone Audiometry is cost effective and easy to method. Early diagnosis and timely intervention will reduce the morbidity of deafness in the society.  The need of the hour is early identification and treatment of sudden sensory heå loss and noise induced heå loss.
