Abstract :

 BACKGROUND:

Breast carcinoma is the second most common carcinoma in women and accounts for 22% of all cancers in women, which is more than twice the prevalence of cancers in women at any other site. Recent information suggests that globally, after lung cancer, carcinoma of east is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths and is the most common cancer among women excluding the non–melanoma skin cancers. India accounts for nearly six percent of deaths due to east cancer in the world and also one out of every 22 women in India are diagnosed with east cancer every year.

AIMS:

To determine the extent of east cancer awareness, in terms of knowledge about risk factors and screening, among women in the local population through questionnaires

METHODOLOGY:

This study used data from women at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital in Mangalore, to determine east cancer awareness, which included knowledge of risk factors, east self–examination, mammography and east cancer screening. The survey was based on two previously validated knowledge–based lists of questionnaires.

RESULTS:

The study demonstrated that a positive family history was connected with higher east cancer awareness. Family history, age and occupation had large impact on screening and cancer awareness.

CONCLUSION:

These outcomes give useful data about the level of awareness among women in the local population, which in turn will be useful for making changes and planning future programs for east cancer awareness and screening.
