Social Constraints of Women Participation in Sporting Events in Bharathidasan University

Abstract :

The purpose of the study was to analyse the social constraints of women participation in sporting events in Bharathidasan University. To achieve this purpose, hundred women students were selected randomly from 10 colleges affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli, Tamilnadu, India. It included various types of faculties such as arts and science colleges. The data of detailed information collected through women sports sociology problem inventory (WSSPI). The obtained data were statistically analysed and interpreted along with calculations of percentages, chi-squares and one way analysis of variance. The level of significance was fixed at 0.05 levels. The results of the study showed that there was a lack of encouragement from the parents and family members, lack of sports - orientation of the people living in society, the traditional way of living was a big hurdle for women in taking part in sporting events, there had not been a good leadership among physical education personnel and a proper motivation system for imparting participation and training and social - cultural prejudices, superstitions and beliefs regarding social conventions and taboos were important factors that limited women’s participation in sporting events .
