SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION AND MAJOR DESTINATION OF IN–COUNTRY ECONOMIC MIGRATION IN NEPAL

Bhim Raj Suwal

Abstract :

Migration of human population takes place for economic as well as non–economic reasons. Based on the latest population census data, this paper examines spatial distribution, major destinations, and changing purposes of in–country economic migration in Nepal. The study indicates that only one–third of the in–country migration in Nepal is economic migration which is mostly concentrated in 15 districts receiving highest number of economic migration. These 15 districts are designated as major destinations of the economic migrants. The 15 districts are further designated as 6 major regional destinations – 4 in Tarai and 2 in the hills. Economic migration to Tarai takes place largely for agricultural purpose while migration to the hills has been largely non–agricultural migration. The study also found that intention of economic migrants is gradually shifting to non–agricultural pursuits with increased concentration of such migration in central hill especially three districts of Kathmandu Valley.
