STEM CELLS: A NEWER APPROACH IN PERIODONTAL REGENERATION

Abstract :

Regeneration of tissues destroyed by periodontitis has long been an altruistic goal of periodontal therapy.Current regenerative procedures have limitations in attaining complete and predicable regeneration, especially in advanced periodontal defects.To date periodontal regeneration is considered to be biologically possible but clinically unpredictable. Stem cells are the novel entrant in periodontal regeneration. Recently, reports have begun to emerge demonstrating that populations of adult stem cells reside in the periodontal ligament of humans and other animals. This opens the way for new cell–based therapies for periodontal regeneration.
