THE AROMA OF POVERTY

Dr. R. Padmavathi

Abstract :

My research article is on Anita Desai’s Aroma of Poverty in IN CUSTODY. One can wonder how poverty can give out an aroma - a pleasant smell. Poverty, in actuality can give out only a stench, reminding one of unhygienic surroundings, unwashed bodies stinking of perspiration, ragged clothes washed without soap and the open toilets on the platforms where people cook, eat, sleep and die. But a life of poverty lived in dignity, acceptance and patience converts the stench into an aroma. Patient endurance, portrayed by Anita Desai in her three novels The village by the Sea, In Custody and Baumgartner’s Bombay of the poverty stricken lives of the characters has turned the stench of poverty into an aroma of poverty.
