A biochemical analytical study of serum zinc, copper and ceruloplasmin levels in chronic periodontitis patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional study.

Abstract :

Objective: To assess the relationship of nutrients (Copper, Zinc) and ceruloplasmin in chronic periodontitis patients with and without type–2 diabetics. Methods: This study included a total of sixty subjects (18 females and 42 males) and were divided into three groups – Group I (Healthy subjects), Group II (CGP), Group III (Type II DM with CGP). Serum levels of copper, zinc, ceruloplasmin were estimated and compared among the groups. Results: Mean serum levels of ceruloplasmin were 72.01 in Group 3, 53.29 in Group 2 against 27.49 in Group 1, which were significant. Mean Copper levels showed 182.67 in Group 3, 192.73 in Group 2 against 113.99 which are significant. Mean serum Zinc levels were 50.43 in Group 3, 54.80 in Group 2 and 67.83 in Group 1 which showed difference. Conclusion: A decrease in zinc and increase in serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels in Group 3 compared to Group 2.
