A LONGITUDINAL STUDY ON HYPERTHYROIDISM IN PAEDIATRIC AGE GROUP

Abstract :

This longitudinal study was conducted on 3 (42.86%) boys and 4 (57.14%) girls, who had confirmed diagnosis of hyperthyroidism at a teaching hospital to study their investigational profile and correlate with clinical findings and to follow up all the participants. The mean age at presentation for girls was 11.75 +/– 4.79 years, while that for boys was 13.33 + /– 3.51 years. Height of 6 children was between 25th and 97th percentile, while that of one child was more than 97th percentile. In two children (28.57%), family history for hyperthyroidism was positive, out of which, first degree relative (mother) was affected in one case (14.29%). Firm goitres of Grade Ia, Ib and II were observed in 6 (85.71%) children. The treatment was individualized and modified on the basis of clinical, anthropometric and hormonal parameters. All the children, who were followed up for four years, showed clinical improvement.
