Benthic Foraminifera from the Littoral Zone, south of Chennai, southeast coast of India

Abstract :

In recent times, very few studies have focused on foraminifers from the littoral zone, as more and more researchers are exploring deeper parts of the continental shelf, slope, or even the abyssal floor. Foraminifers from beach sediments, however, are equally important as they can be of immense utility while understanding the dynamics of wave action during tides, cyclonic storm surges, or rarely tsunamis. The littoral zone south of Chennai has been investigated for Recent benthic foraminifera. Accordingly, 24 species belonging to 15 genera, 11 families, 7 superfamilies, and 3 suborders are reported and majority of them illustrated.
