Estimation of Silver from Hypo solution using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy–case study
Vaishali H. Rajurkar
Abstract :
Hypo solution is nothing but a solution obtained from photographic processing. In this processing Sodium thiosulphate is used as a photographic fixer and is referred to hypo. This name is derived from original chemical name, hyposulphite of soda where Sulphate ions are having high ability to bind with soft metals with high affinity. Thus there is formation of silver thiosulphate from AgBr, a typical component of photographic emulsions. Present study deals with determination of Silver content from hypo solution which is provided by J. J. Hospital, Mumbai. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy was used to determine the percentage of Silver in hypo solution. A diluted sample of hypo solution was examine with very little amount of silver i.e. 13.85 x 10–4 gm/L hence hypo solution may be discarded. The technique helps in evaluation of hypo solution in terms of Silver percentage.
