Loss of Life Years of Beedi Workers An Empirical Study in Purulia District of West Bengal

Abstract :
In order to reduce the escalating production costs within the factory sector, there has been a tremendous growth of home–based work based on sub contracting. This form of work within the home–based production offers lesser protection to workers. Longer working hours in an unhealthy working condition is increasing the morbidity of the workers. Workers are suffering from various reported ailments and this attempt has studied the mortality pattern of the selected workers. Premature death out of occupational health ailments were studied in the sample worker families along with and medical advice seeking behavior of the workers. The study found hazardous nature of work like beedi rolling has significant adverse impact on mortality along with health advice seeking behavior of the workers. Based on primary data collected from 1152 beedi rollers on different settlements in and around Jhalda, Purulia, the study found estimated impact of socio economic indicators along with beedi rolling works on health status of the worker families. The study used cross section data collected from 576 beedi workers and 576 non beedi workers living in four different blocks of Purulia District. We used STATA 11 software for estimating our model.
