ROLE OF ORMELOXIFENE, ORAL PROGESTOGENS & LOW DOSE ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS IN ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING – A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Abstract :

OBJECTIVE:–To compare the efficacy of ormeloxifene ,norethisterone and low dose oral contraceptive pills in abnormal uterine bleeding. METHODS :–96 women with abnormal uterine bleeding were selected randomly and divided into 3 groups . Group 1 was given ormeloxifene 60 mg twice a week for 12 weeks followed by 60 mg once a week for next 12 weeks. Group 2 was given 5 mg norethisterone twice daily for 21 days. Group 3 was given low dose oral contraceptive pills containing 30 μg of ethinyl estradiol and 150 μglevonorgestrel from day 1 of the menstrual cycle to day 21 and for 6 consecutive cycle. Follow up was done at 3 and 6 months by analyzing PBAC score, hemoglobin and endometrial thickness. RESULT:–The reduction in mean PBAC score with ormeloxifene (245.5to 65.65) was significantly more than that seen with norethisterone (236.4 to 108.5) and low dose oral contraceptive pills (226.8 to 97.5 ) after 6 month of treatment (<0.0001).The increase in hemoglobin level and reduction in endometrial thickness were also found to be significantly more with ormeloxifene than norethisterone and low dose oral contraceptive pills. No major side effects were reported in any group. CONCLUSION: Ormeloxifene is more effective and well tolerated with superior compliance than norethisterone and low dose oral contraceptive pills in medical treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding.
