Sanitary Habits among the Tribal Communities of Odisha: An Empirical Observation

Abstract :

 Use of water, personal hygiene, sanitary habit and health status are interrelated and interdependent entities.   The habit formation   is the result of continuous process of imitation, repetition and learning   a behavior   to the extent that it is followed almost like a routine.  Irrespective of societal development, the tribal women are the home managers who act as care takers of children and the aged at home also participate in production process.   Children imitate the parents’ and other adults’ activities at home and outside which include behavioral components. Thus, sanitary habits of adults are being imitated by children. The paces of change in technology do not match with the change in habits easily as a result sanitary habits among the tribal communities remains relatively unchanged across the generations including   personal hygiene and sanitation.

The paper has been based on empirical observation. It   offers a descriptive analysis on the personal hygiene and sanitary habits of the tribal communities of Odisha with special reference to the Parajas of highland undivided Koraput .  The data derived from field observation are compared with reported data about a few other tribal communities of the nation with a view to identify the common trend across the tribal communities. It is observed that there is been a close relationship between the habitat and personal hygiene and sanitary habit of the communities. Further, it is interpreted that unless a continuous and constant motivational input commensuration with local culture to inculcate the benefits of better sanitation habits are given and strategically help them retain induced personal hygiene through traditional leaders as a demand driven approach, the objectives of sustainable development goals will be languished.
